(a) In the absence of a more rational analysis, the gust load factors must be computed as follows:
where:
= density of air at sea-level (kg/m3)
U = gust velocity (m/s)
V = equivalent air speed (m/s)
a = slope of wing lift curve per radian m = mass of the sailplane (kg)
g = acceleration due to gravity (m/s2)
S = design wing area (m2)
k = gust alleviation factor calculated from the following formula:

(non-dimensional sailplane mass ratio)

= density of air (kg/m3) at the altitude considered
1m = mean geometric chord of wing (m)
